Amritsar Hosts Grand Welfare Drive: 1,015 Assistive Devices Distributed to Senior Citizens under RVY

In a heart-warming display of commitment towards the welfare and rehabilitation of senior citizens, a Free Assistive Device Distribution Ceremony was held today under the aegis of the Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana (RVY) of the Government of India. The event formed part of the ongoing 75 Social Empowerment Ceremonies (Seva Parv) and was organised at Government Pehal School, Karampura Resource Centre, E-Block, Ranjit Avenue, Amritsar.

The distinguished occasion was graced by Chairman, Improvement Trust, Shri Karamjit Singh Rintu, who presided as the Chief Guest, with the special presence of Ms. Kanika Mehta, Junior Manager (Marketing). The programme was jointly organised by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan), Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India, through its implementing agency Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO), in close partnership with the District Social Security Department, Amritsar.

Speaking on the occasion, Chairman Karamjit Singh Rintu lauded the initiative as a shining example of responsive governance, noting that such efforts not only restore dignity and independence to the elderly but also reflect the compassionate face of public service. His active presence and words of encouragement were widely appreciated by the beneficiaries and the local community.

During the ceremony, as many as 228 senior citizens were provided with a total of 1,015 assistive devices valued at approximately ₹22.21 lakh. These included 21 wheelchairs, 01 chair-cum-commode, 207 walking sticks, 384 hearing aids, 03 walkers, 139 LS belts, 238 knee braces, and 22 silicone cushions. The beneficiaries had been identified earlier through a systematic pre-assessment camp organised in the district.

The initiative highlights the central government’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of the elderly, while the Punjab Government, through its district administration and social security department, played a pivotal role in ensuring smooth coordination and outreach. Such collaborative efforts underscore the importance of Centre-State synergy in realising inclusive welfare objectives.

Officials and staff from ALIMCO and the District Social Security Department, Amritsar were present in large numbers, extending their support to ensure the seamless distribution of devices and guidance to beneficiaries.

The event was widely hailed as a milestone in the service of society, demonstrating that when governments, institutions, and visionary leaders such as Shri Karamjit Singh Rintu join hands, genuine empowerment reaches those who need it the most.
