Celebrating sporting excellence: Tanvi and Radhika Sharma felicitated by DC Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal and DBA Jalandhar.
In an era where Indian sport is flourishing on the global stage, Tanvi Sharma, the 16-year-old badminton sensation from Hoshiarpur, Punjab, has carved her name into history by rising to the summit of the BWF Junior Women’s Singles rankings, becoming the World No. 1. Her remarkable ascent is not merely a personal victory, but a moment of collective national pride, as she exemplifies the future of Indian athletics through grit, discipline, and extraordinary flair.
The District Badminton Association, Jalandhar, takes immense pride in honouring Tanvi for this unparalleled accomplishment. Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Jalandhar, extended his heartfelt congratulations, describing her feat as a momentous leap for women in sport and a beacon for aspiring athletes across India. He commended not only Tanvi’s singular dedication but also the unwavering support system behind her success.
Special commendations are due to Ms. Meena Sharma, Tanvi’s mother and coach, whose nurturing guidance and resolute belief in her daughter’s potential have been instrumental in shaping this glorious journey. Equal appreciation must also be extended to Radhika Sharma, Tanvi’s steadfast practice partner and another promising talent poised for greatness, and to Ritin Khanna, for his unwavering support throughout Tanvi's rise to the global stage.
As articulated by Dr Himanshu Aggarwal, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Jalandhar, in his congratulatory message, this moment is not merely a celebration of individual success, but a broader celebration of young Indian girls rewriting narratives and pushing boundaries on the international front.

Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Jalandhar, presenting a ₹1 lakh cheque to Tanvi Sharma in recognition of her rise to Junior World No. 1.
An Unstoppable Rise Through the Ranks
Tanvi’s recent silver-medal run at the BWF US Open Super 300 in Iowa marked a turning point in her career. Defeating senior international players ranked in the top 60, she became the youngest Indian to reach a BWF World Tour final, and simultaneously achieved a career-high senior world ranking of No. 50—a feat that bridges the divide between junior brilliance and senior readiness.
Her commanding performances in the Badminton Asia Junior Championships 2025 saw her bring home a bronze medal—one of two Indian girls to reach the semi-finals, making it a historic double podium finish alongside Vennala Kalagotla. She was also a pivotal part of the Indian team that secured gold at the 2024 Asia Team Championships.
Behind the Player: A Story of Maternal Mentorship
The credit for Tanvi’s exceptional discipline and on-court maturity belongs not only to her, but to her formidable support system. Her mother and coach, Meena Sharma, a former volleyball player herself, has been the cornerstone of Tanvi’s journey. From introducing her daughters—Tanvi and elder sister Radhika Sharma—to badminton at a tender age, to training them with professional rigour, Meena Sharma embodies the spirit of Indian motherhood and mentorship.
Radhika, herself an emerging badminton player, has served as Tanvi’s regular sparring partner. The consistent encouragement of family friend Ritin Khanna, too, has provided Tanvi with the confidence and resilience needed to tackle the international circuit.
Training and Transformation: From Defence to Dominance
After her initial training at the Pullela Gopichand Academy, Tanvi refined her game under the tutelage of Park Tae-sang, the former coach of Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, at the BAI National Centre of Excellence, Guwahati. Park’s assessment of Tanvi as “part Saina, part Sindhu” captures the essence of her evolving style—blending tactical nuance with explosive athleticism.
Her ability to transition from a traditionally defensive baseline game to an attacking, court-dominating presence is what now sets her apart. Strategic shot variation, enhanced stamina, and unwavering court presence have made her a formidable opponent, even among seasoned professionals.
An Inspiration for a Generation
Tanvi Sharma is not merely a sportswoman; she is a symbol of a rising India—one that invests in its daughters, trains with intent, and competes with confidence on the world stage. Her trajectory towards the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics is more than plausible—it is expected.
In the words of Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal:
“Tanvi's success is not hers alone. It belongs to every young Indian girl with a dream, every mother who sacrifices for her children, and every coach who sees greatness before the world does. Punjab and India are proud of her.”
Beyond the Podium :
As she ascends the global rankings with quiet tenacity and sharp focus, Tanvi Sharma stands as an exemplar of the new wave of Indian athletes—well-prepared, fearlessly ambitious, and grounded in values of humility and hard work.
The story of Tanvi Sharma is just beginning, and if her current form is any indication, the future of Indian badminton is in exceptionally safe hands.
