In an inspiring display of environmental stewardship and administrative foresight, Deputy Commissioner of Hoshiarpur, Ms. Aashika Jain, IAS, has spearheaded a sweeping green initiative titled #MissionNoPlastic at the revered Mata Chintpurni Mela — one of the region’s most frequented religious congregations.
Recognising the burgeoning ecological threat posed by single-use plastics, the district administration has resolved to enforce a zero-plastic mandate across all Langar (community kitchen) installations during the mela. This commitment is more than regulatory—it is transformational.
Over 300 committed volunteers have been mobilised to actively disseminate the message of cleanliness and eco-consciousness across the Langar sites. These environmental ambassadors are tasked not only with ensuring adherence to anti-plastic guidelines but also with engaging devotees and service organisers in meaningful dialogue about sustainability.
Each Langar stall is now mandated to eschew plastic in favour of biodegradable, environment-friendly materials, setting a new benchmark for religious events in India. The administration has also introduced an incentive-driven model: Recognition and accolades will be conferred upon the cleanest Langar sites and the most impactful volunteers, fostering a culture of healthy competition and civic pride.
Speaking through an official communication on social media, DC Aashika Jain asserted the administration’s unflinching resolve in promoting environmental ethics at every level of public engagement. The initiative is emblematic of the Punjab Government’s evolving commitment to sustainable governance, public participation, and grassroots-led transformation.
An emergency helpline (01882-292570) has been activated to ensure rapid response in case of exigencies and to provide real-time support during the mela.
This initiative not only reinforces the sanctity of the mela but also positions Hoshiarpur as a model district in the realm of eco-administration. It is a compelling reminder that public festivals, when harmonised with sustainable policies, can become powerful instruments of ecological awakening.
