Dr Himanshu Aggarwal inaugurates newly built multi-purpose courts and running track at Raizada Hansraj Stadium.

In an emphatic statement of the city’s sporting ambition, Jalandhar has secured its place as Punjab’s badminton capital. Dr Himanshu Aggarwal, Deputy Commissioner and President of the District Badminton Association, inaugurated four multi-purpose courts and a newly-laid synthetic running track at the historic Raizada Hansraj Stadium this week — a development that transforms the venue into the only badminton stadium in the state boasting ten courts.

Constructed at a cost of ₹25 lakh and completed in a mere three months, the upgraded facility reflects a blend of speed, precision and vision — values echoed in the sport itself.

Speaking at the inauguration, Dr Aggarwal underscored the significance of sports as an agent of holistic development:

“Athletics and sport are not confined to physical prowess; they cultivate discipline, nurture a sense of unity, and forge resilient character. These are the values that prepare our youth not just for competition, but for life,” he remarked, earning applause from gathered dignitaries, athletes, and residents.

A Salute to Sporting Heroes
The ceremony also celebrated the achievements of players who have carried Punjab’s name to national and international podiums. In a gesture both dignified and heartfelt, Dr Aggarwal presented cash awards to the athletes and extended special congratulations to their parents, recognising the unseen sacrifices behind their children’s triumphs.

Charting the Future
The occasion was further marked by the unveiling of the official poster for the Indian Oil Jalandhar District Badminton Championship, set to be staged from 28 to 31 August. With its expanded capacity and enhanced amenities, Raizada Hansraj Stadium is now well-positioned to host elite-level tournaments and nurture emerging talent.

Vision from the Association
District Badminton Association Secretary and former national player Ritin Khanna reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to making the facility ultra-modern. He disclosed that several projects are already in the pipeline to ensure the stadium meets the most exacting national and international standards.

For a city steeped in sporting tradition, the inauguration is more than an infrastructure upgrade — it is a statement of intent. As the shuttlecocks begin to fly and feet pound the new track, Jalandhar is signalling, with conviction, that its sporting future will be as vibrant and competitive as its past.
